Artist Toolbox: Tuff London

After recently dropping their latest club weapon ‘Take You Up’ on the popular Toolroom Trax imprint label, we wanted to find out what exactly is in their ‘Artist Toolbox’…

Up next on our Artist Toolbox series… It’s Tuff London!

A duo who needs no introduction to the #ToolroomFamily. Tuff London have been a part of the firm for a minute, with multiple releases on both Toolroom & Toolroom Trax, as well as collaborations with Steve Edwards, Ben Remember & of course, the boss man himself Mark Knight!

Aside from this, Ben Keen (one half of Tuff London) is also a key part of the Toolroom Academy, as a tutor for the Logic focused Production Certificate course!

The stomping Tech House duo have been tearing up the scene with their big room, clubby sound! After recently dropping their latest club weapon ‘Take You Up’ on the popular Toolroom Trax imprint label, we wanted to find out what exactly is in their ‘Artist Toolbox’…

1. Logic Pro

Logic is my choice of DAW, for me it’s the most intuitive program out there for making music.

In particular the new in built sampler. I use it all the time for cutting up and manipulating loops to make them your own. If you think of an idea that you would like to do to a sound, then you can probably do it in the sampler.

2.   Empirical Distressor compressor

This for me is the daddy of all compressors.

It has more punch than Mike Tyson and that clean 80’s sound which makes it great for a drum buss . Or you can add that grit with its Dist 2 or 3 settings .

3.  Roland cloud

Not exactly one piece of equipment but this subscription service gives you absolutely everything you could want from Roland. Fat basses from the Juno 106 to 909 drums and literally everything in between.

4. TD-3

I’m absolutely loving this 303 rip-off.  It’s definitely the best £90 I’ve ever spent.

It’s fatter and dirtier than any of its plug-in counterparts and actually cheaper than most of the plug-in versions. It’s also great to get that hands-on feeling again and actually have some knobs to twiddle.

5.  Soundtoys Decapitator

I am a big fan of simple plug-ins that save time. This really was a toss up between endless smile and LFO tool. All of these plug-ins are incredibly simple save you time and do one great job. For me the Decapitator is a great really simple effective way to add saturation to your sounds. It’s really controllable and simply does a great job.
