Production Certificate

Tell us about your production journey so far – how long have you been producing? What drew you to it in the first place?

I have been producing for around 18 months but lacked the clarity to find my own sound and was caught up producing loads of styles of house music.

Toolroom have been my number one record label for years – I love everything on the label from the more piano based tracks from Chaney to the tech house sound of Trax. Starting the course was a no-brainer as I wanted to get the insider knowledge into the sound and high-quality productions that Toolroom are known for.

Week 1 of the course focuses on artist identity and positioning. Did this make you analyse your sound in any way?

110%. Although I loved all of the technical classes, one of the best parts of the course was identifying what my sound is and dive into who I want to be as an artist. I feel my sound is far more refined now and focussed on the chunky, groovy house music that I am most passionate about.

The creative sampling techniques literally blew my mind.

What other modules really stood out to you throughout the 12 weeks?

The creative sampling techniques literally blew my mind. I had no idea how powerful the stock Logic sampler is. Ben spent a lot of time showing us various ways we can get the most out of our samples – and it was also reassuring to know that you don’t have to make everything yourself from scratch. Some of the loops out there are already top quality (like the Toolroom packs) and Ben really showed us how we can take those and make them our own – and completely unrecognisable from the original.

How important was the A&R feedback throughout your journey?

It was critical in my opinion. Pete is one of the best in the game and has a wealth of knowledge. It was very reassuring that he was pleased with my progress each week and both Pete and Ben gave very targeted advice to make my track better. They both genuinely care about everyone’s tracks and their own journey and it’s the kind of advice that is simply unparalleled in the industry. Matt Smallwood also joined our final feedback video and didn’t have any changes that he would suggest – which game me so much confidence. I totally trust my sound choice and abilities now and can work through tracks without self-doubt.

How happy were you with the track you made over the course of the 3 months?

Very very happy – its a banger! I have a few final bits to polish up and I think it shall be ready for demo submission.

It's incredible to get advice and tutoring from the best in the game.

What do you think was unique or different about the Production Certificate compared to other programmes/schools out there?

Definitely the time and effort spent by the tutors and the structure of the course itself. It is very easy to follow as it’s in a logical structure. I know some other labels throw around the “family” idea a lot but Toolroom Academy genuinely felt as if I was part of something and that we were all valued students. Genuinely, there was more effort put in by Toolroom than there was in my 5-year university degree!

How would you compare your production ability/knowledge now, compared to when you started the course?

Its come on leaps and bounds. My technical skills are so much better but my confidence has been the part that has skyrocketed. Its incredible to get advice and tutoring from the best in the game. Wherever I needed to improve or change something, Ben and Pete gave me the honest advice. There was no fluff or beating around the bush which made the course run seamlessly.

Has your ability on Logic/ableton improved since you’ve taken the course?

As above, my skills have improved tenfold. I really enjoyed that the course was native to Logic and stock plugins as it really showed that you don’t need all the expensive gear to make a great track. I just wish I could get a refund on all the plugins and sample packs I bought before starting the course!

Did you manage to connect and built relationships with other students on the course?

Absolutely. We have a whatsapp group with everyone on the course and we bounce ideas off each other and give feedback etc. Some of us also met up for the summer event at Studio 338 so it was great to meet people in person – although there may have been some sore heads the next morning! I also met up with one of the guys, Adam, in Toronto the other week whilst on holiday over there so there are some friendships made for life!

How would you rate your tutors?

11/10 – as above!

What was the single best experience you had on the programme?

The final feedback was pretty special. It was such a fun experience to hear everyone’s tracks and everyone was cheering one another on. Not to mention the fact that Matt seemed to dig the track and didn’t suggest any changes.

Would you recommend the Production Certificate to other producers?

I already have! Several friends have been in touch to ask whether it is worth it and I have told them all to sign up. Regardless of style of music, the course is universal and the techniques could be used for whether you want to produce house, tech house, techno, disco or whatever else.

As a graduate, what are your thoughts on the Toolroom Academy overall?

Best investment in myself ever. Top tier knowledge, awesome tutors and the framework that would benefit any producer.
