Tell us about your production journey so far – how long have you been producing? What drew you to it in the first place?
So my production journey started actually with DJing. I started DJing at the age of 12 and then I started music production at 17. So in total, I have been producing music for 5 years and the reason why I was drawn to Toolroom academy was that I desperately need guidance. Also, Toolroom tracks were one of my favourites.
Week 1 of the course focuses on artist identity and positioning. Did this make you analyse your sound in any way?
I would say over my time during the course, I believe my identity has changed because I started to learn new things, which made me realize I have not figured out my true identity.
What other modules really stood out to you throughout the 12 weeks?
My favourite module was the one-on-one conversation with Ben and Pete. I was going through tough times, and they helped me get through it. Therefore, that module and session alone will always be remembered by me.
How important was the A&R feedback throughout your journey?
The A&R feedback helped me analyse my tracks from others which I have never been able to do so. Therefore, it helped me figure out the sounds that I should focus on.
How happy were you with the track you made over the course of the 3 months?
I would say I was fairly happy about my track however; I was even happier because I had finally gained the confidence to sit down and write my own tracks.
What do you think was unique or different about the Production Certificate compared to other programmes/schools out there?
The family element toolroom brings is amazing. When I am sending my songs to fellow alumni members, or we have our toolroom alumni events it feels like I know everyone for a long time.
How would you compare your production ability/knowledge now, compared to when you started the course?
The difference in my production ability when I first started and when I took the course was massive.
Has your ability on Logic/Ableton improved since you’ve taken the course?
Ben had thought us so many tips and tricks for Ableton which I would have never known. Also having someone explain to you in my opinion is better than sitting down and watching a youtube video because I could ask questions.
Did you manage to connect and built relationships with other students on the course?
YES! The alumni network we have in place is one of the best for asking questions, collaborating, or even support artist on release dates.
How would you rate your tutors?
100/10 on both Pete and Ben
What was the single best experience you had on the programme?
Just being part of Toolroom is the best experience because I have always loved the label and I could say I am friends with the label as well.
On a scale of 1-10, how likely would you be to recommend this course to other producers?
10
As a graduate, what are your thoughts on the Toolroom Academy overall?
As said many times Toolroom Academy has changed my life in many ways. Overall, I wouldn’t be here without the support from the Tutors, Staff, and Alumni members.
