What made you decide to enrol on the Creativity Unlocked programme?
I wanted to have a deep dive into the Toolroom sound, which I’ve been a long-time fan of, and there’s no other place than the Academy to learn from. The teachers were amazing, especially Dean!
What other modules really stood out to you throughout the course?
I really liked the first and last module, the first being what A&R’s are listening for in a demo (I wish there was a course on A&R’ing as well), and the last one was the final feedback on the course track from the Toolroom A&R.
How happy were you with the track you made over the course of the 3 months?
I didn’t quite feel the course track at first, but as all the musical components came together, it grew on me. Needless to say, I’m happy about it since it got signed to Toolroom a couple of months later!
How would you compare your production ability/knowledge now, compared to when you started the course?
I think coming out of the course, I’m more selective about the musical ideas and sounds, and how the sounds musically interact with each other. The arrangement is something that I now have more confidence in.
How would you rate your tutors?
10/10 right out of the gate! I really appreciate Dean with the technical knowledge of the production aspect and Pete with the A&R ear, couldn’t ask for a greater duo!
Would you recommend the Creativity Unlocked course to other producers?
It all depends on what you want to get out of it. As I’ve said earlier, I think it’s the best course to do if you want to get really nerdy about the Toolroom sound.
